Even though it felt like we crossed over to a new day in the fight for Queer rights, here we are fighting “don’t say gay” and countless erasure attempts that target LGBTQ people. These acts of hate are uniquely damaging to young people.
Around 40% of the 2,500 youth living without shelter tonight in Minnesota identify as LGBTQ and BIPOC people are disproportionately represented. Just being LGBTQ means you’re 120% more likely to experience homelessness than your straight peers. What gives, how are we here?!
There is no single reason why young people experience homelessness – it’s intersectional. Systems of oppression, racism, and poverty are some of the root causes of homelessness. Yet young adults are resilient, inspiring, and should be in charge of their journey. With stability, trust, and youth-centered support, their dreams can become reality.
Our spring fundraiser starts today, and we’re asking you to give big!
The challenges are bigger than ever, as you know. Whether it’s a place for the night or for a year, Avenues supports stability for young people in order for them to have a better path out of homelessness. Navigating education, career, health and wellness; we’re asking you to support these programs.
